The BBB acts as a guardian, selectively allowing essential nutrients and oxygen into the brain while keeping out harmful substances. However, when the BBB is compromised, toxins can accumulate, leading to inflammation and cell death. My blog provides a quick overview of the BBB's vital role in maintaining brain health and the impact of its dysfunction on aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
Through this publication, I discuss various components of the BBB, including tight junction proteins, transporters, astrocyte end-feet, pericytes, basal membrane, and the role of neurons in neurovascular coupling. Additionally, the article highlights the specific changes that occur in the BBB during aging and neurodegenerative diseases, such as disruptions to tight junction proteins, modifications in molecule expression, and damage to endothelial glycocalyx. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for developing targeted therapies and improving diagnostic approaches.
